TRAVEL STORIES: Nigerian Independence Day
Two years ago, I spent a month in Kano, Nigeria. It was an incredible time – I went to my first polo match, was a special guest at a soccer game, toured a mud house that had been around for over 1000 years, tried new foods, learned about irrigation and farming in the desert, golfed on the browns, shopped in outdoor markets and experienced how people lived in a completely different part of the world.
There were also the not-so-positive experiences: we hit harmattan season, I had Malaria, and the living conditions were rough, and that’s speaking kindly.
Yet what stands out most is the people! From Happiness to Peter to Mohammad and the rest of our security team, to the farmers and the many other friends we met along the way, my experience in Kano was a great reminder that life is about people. These folks didn’t have much, but that never stopped them from smiling and having fun!
I share this because today is Nigerian Independence Day (shout out to everyone celebrating), and it’s a great excuse to reflect and a fantastic reminder to make the most of every day!
